I think it’s a bit ironic that Ford and GM offer compact hatchbacks, a type of car notoriously popular in the EU, and FCA, a company that’s part European, doesn’t.

Fiat do, but not everywhere. Without that much commercial success it must be said.

Too small. Compact hatchbacks are usually C segment, not A.

Of course, where would they sell it, since the Chevrolet brand was withdrawn from Europe? The BRICS group? Lol.

I really really like the look of the Cruze hatch. Looks better than the Focus in my eyes.

Obviously. One is brand new, the other is past its middle age and expects a replacement in the next couple of years.

I think that’s a fallacious way of thinking. There are plenty of brand new cars that look abysmal, and older cars that still look fantastic.

Chrysler or Dodge need a compact hatchback.

Here you go.
Fiat Tipo/Aegea. This one’s the four door Aegea, there’s a hatch as well.

Cruze looks good ... Focus come in ST and (drooling) RS options.
Focus wins.

To be fair, the Focus didn’t come in ST or RS trims right away. So there’s still room to grow.
Besides, if I’m shopping sub-$30k CAD, the fact that a model has more powerful trims really doesn’t mean anything.

Well the FCA don’t really have much in the way of a compact hatch other than the Fiat Grande Punto.
Ford and GM have a wealth of cars to offer up which although are American companies were designed, engineered and made for other markets and only later offered to the U.S. Market.
The U.S. Got the Astra for ONE year while Europe is several generations old.
The U.S. Only got the Mk1 Focus and the present day one while Europe had the Mk2 and Mk2.5.
Ford and GM could easily run the FCA out of town if they imported the Ford Fiesta 3 door, Ecosport, B-Max, C-Max, Focus estate, GM with the Corsa 3/5 door, Astra 3/5/5 door estate, Insignia estate.

That’s true, but it was designed in Australia and developed in Korea and Europe. It was designed with Europe in mind, back when GM still believed that it can make Chevy a success in the EU.
They even made a wagon.

According to European reviewers, the Ford Ecosport is the worst Ford.
And come on, it’s hard enough to get the typical American buyers( especially those who don’t live in large cities) interested in normal hatchbacks. Do you think they will jump on weird 3 doors, small minivans or wagons?

Personally I think it would be a breathe of fresh air for them and offer a larger line up for the smaller class segment.
Granted yes the Ecosport isn’t great but by and large the greatest downfall of it is the engine, it needs a bit more power and better economy but engines are changing all the time.

If you blur the line between “hatchback” and “crossover”, then Jeep Cherokee?

Not sure whether it’s actually true, but I don’t believe that Fiat has a design that could compete as yet. If not in technical ability, in brand awareness.
They’ve probably got their hands (and finances) full with the revival of Alfa and Maserati...
